Technology has had a significant impact on the field of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (commonly known as ENT - Ear, Nose, and Throat). It has improved diagnostics, treatment options, surgical techniques, and patient outcomes. Here are some examples of technologies commonly used in ENT:

  • Endoscopic Imaging
  • Microsurgery Instruments
  • Hearing Aids and Assistive Listening Devices
  • Cochlear Implants
  • Balloon Sinuplasty
  • Acoustic Analysis

Ear pain or discharge in children is usually caused by a middle ear infection that follows a cold or throat infection. Symptoms include pain, fever, irritability, or hearing loss. Most infections will clear up with medication and ear drops. However, recurrent infections may require further assessment by an ENT specialist.

Earwax should not be cleaned using cotton sticks or sharp objects, as this can push the wax further into the ear. If there is an obstruction or hearing problems, a doctor can remove the wax safely from the ear using drops or cleaning methods at the hospital.

The symptoms of hearing loss include the need for repetition in conversations, the volume of the TV being turned up, or speech delay in children. Tests such as audiometry are conducted to determine the level of hearing. Early detection enables the use of medications, hearing aids, or other methods if necessary.

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the passages in the sinuses that leads to headaches, facial pain, nasal congestion, or nasal discharge. Most cases of sinusitis can be treated with medications, steam inhalation, and nasal sprays. Surgery may be recommended if the symptoms persist.

Hoarseness of the voice can be caused by voice strain, infections, acid reflux, or vocal nodules. If the voice hoarseness persists for over two weeks, it is advisable to visit an ENT specialist to check the vocal cords.

A lump in the throat, also known as globus sensation, is often associated with acidity, throat irritation, or stress. This condition can be relieved with treatment for reflux, staying hydrated, and taking care of one’s voice. If the condition persists, it is best to have it checked for other possible causes.
